U8A Christmas Friendly on Saturdat 15/12/12
Last friendly match of season at home to Wicklow, who had beaten us before at home and who we drew away during the season. The morning started off with mince pies and coffee for parents down at the pitch and there was good banter before the match finally got under way. Photographer and dad David Cavanagh from Wicklow took the photos of both teams before the whistle went to start the match. Wicklow were a hard team to break down but Ashford persevered and the first goal came after 10 minutes with a fine ball through to Sam Greene who slotted with ease. Wicklow battled back and at half time it was 1-1. After some cookies at the break it was back to the game with Ashford on the back foot and under pressure, but great defending by Adam Daly and Karl Drummond. Ashford’s second goal came from a great high curler outside the box from Josh Bishop 2-1.
10 minutes to go Wicklow pulled another back after getting a corner 2-2. Great defensive work by the twins Oscar and Lewis who where battling all over the pitch to get the ball and Fionn Doyle in goal who was at his usual best diving down to get the ball and preventing Wicklow from getting another goal. Midfield was solid with Felix Baumann there to prevent Wicklow getting through with some good tackles. With 5 minutes to go the “poacher” Oisin Denver latched on to a pass from Sam Greene to slot one past in the left bottom corner , 3-2 to Ashford.
Great day and hard work from all the players
